St Augustine of Canterbury

East Hendred

About us

Welcome to St Augustine's. We're a friendly church in the lively community of East Hendred.

The Church is open every day between approximately 9am and 4pm, and there are services at 10am every Sunday. We have tea and coffee after these services which everyone is welcome to join in with.

There are organised children's activities at every service. We also have a children's area in the South aisle. The vestry under the tower can be used as a more private space to take young children to, where there are also baby changing facilities and a toilet.

The type of service varies between Holy Communion usually on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month, Family Service on the last Sunday of the month, and morning worship. All our services include a sermon and both modern and classic hymns.

History

St. Augustine's Church is situated in the middle of East Hendred and has been since the 14th Century, on entering the church one sees the pillars which have many carvings.

The Chancel screen was added in the 19th Century, after the one guarding the catholic Eyston Chapel was erected in the 15th Century. The ancient font at the rear has been used for all baptisms.

The tower houses six bells, which are rung before services, also the faceless clock, one of only a few in the country. This has recently been restored as this year it is 500 years old, it chimes, strikes and every three hours plays the Angel`s Hymn.
